Pa Bob Gay relaxing at home after church

Born about 17 years before birth and death certificates were required by North Carolina’s vital statistics law in 1913, Robert “Pa Bob” Gay could only rely on his mother, Arie Gay’s memory, and other family members recollections for his day of birth.

On three different occasions Pa Bob used a different date of birth. For his US World War I Draft Card in 1917, Pa Bob wrote that he was born on April 5, 1896. Also, Pa Bob used April 5, 1896 as his date of birth to treeapply and receive a Social Security number in 1956..

Pa Bob used 1895 as his year of birth for his January 3, 1915 marriage to Ma Lillie.

Pa Bob chose July 25, 1896 as the authentic date of his birth. That was the date he celebrated and the date that the family knew about. It was also the date that Arie Gay, Pa Bob’s mother, gave to the enumerators who gathered census data in 1900.

On this day, we are sharing our recollections about Robert “Pa Bob” Gay.

Robert J.”Bud” Gay is the son of Robert J. Gay, Sr. and Mary Spain Gay. Bud vividly tells about the emotion-packed times Pa Bob would meet them after they arrived home in North Carolina from Connecticut.

Amp Daniels and his son Antwan Daniels are members of DMZ and the Gay-Parker family.
Amp is the son of Johnny Ray Daniels and the late Dorothy “Sis” Vines Daniels. Amp is the grandson of the late Arie Gay Vines Artis, daughter of the late Pa Bob Gay and the late Lillie Parker Gay.
Here’s the genealogical information from the Gay-Parker family tree for great-great grandson Antwan Daniels, who is a member of the seventh generation of the Gay Parker family.

This seventh generational glimpse begins with Robert “Pa Bob” Gay’s maternal grandfather Jacob Gay and Pa Bob’s maternal grandmother Jane Jefferson Gay; and Pa Bob’s paternal grandfather Richard Gay and Pa Bob’s paternal grandmother Arie Hemby Gay; then, Pa Bob’s father George Washington Gay and Pa Bob’s mother Arie Gay.

For Lillie “Ma Lillie” Parker Gay the seventh generational glimpse begins with her paternal grandfather Turner Joyner and paternal grandmother Nicey Joyner; Ma Lillie’s maternal grandfather Dempsey Parker and her maternal grandmother Viney Barrett Parker; Ma Lillie’s father Spence Joyner and her mother Jennie Parker.

Next, Pa Bob’s and Ma Lillie’s daughter Arie Gay Vines and son in-law Freeman Vines, Sr.; and Pa Bob’s and Ma Lillie’s granddaughter Dorothy “Sis” Vines Daniels and grandson-in-law Johnny Ray Daniels; and finally, their great grandson Anthony “Amp” Daniels and great granddaughter in-law Chiquita Daniels, who are great-great grandson Antwan Daniels,’ parents.

This was from a promise I made you, myself in 1975.

My dad drove me three hours one way to Winston Salem State University in the fall of 1975 to drop me off. I could see the pride that swelled within him, his very own boy at college.

I can only imagine the thoughts that ran through his mind: My boy won’t have to taste the bitter labor that I had to endure.

I stayed a short while and joined the army with the promise to get that degree, and here we are forty eight years later. I give God all the Glory HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!

So a lady said to me when she saw my Bachelor’s degree, “I’ve been watching you through the years. Now you have moved from this position to that. Now you are a Bishop. What more can you learn?”

I said to her. “The more I learn of God the less I know about Him. Therefore, I have to keep grinding out his word.”

Shemika Gay Davis is the wife of Anthony Davis and the mother three children: Jamarion, Keveian, and Kennedy. She is the daughter of Gwendolyn Gay, the granddaughter of the late Lucille Gay Blow, and the great granddaughter of Bob “Pa Bob” Gay and Lillie “Ma Lillie” Parker Gay.

A gathering of brothers, sisters, a father, an uncle, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends joined togethet to proclaim the 60th birthday of Mary Alice Gay Worsley.

Pastor Elder Mary Worsley, wife of Deacon Charles Worsley, is the fifth child of Deacon David Gay, Sr. and the late Mary Whitehurst Gay. Mary Alice is also the granddaughter of the late Robert “Pa Bob” Gay and the late Lillie “Ma Lillie” Parker Gay.

I’m excited to share that after almost 18 years of working in various healthcare leadership roles, I leaped into full time entrepreneurship. In January 2023, Health Evolve Technologies was given birth with the goal of closing the gap on health inequities.

As many of you know, I suffered from HELLP Syndrome, a life threatening hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, in 2012. We lost our daughter, Lauren Kelly, in the process. My husband, Terrell, and I then went on to start a lifetime calling of health advocacy work.

The Lord downloaded these inventions into my spirit AFTER I gave Him my yes. I’m not talking about salvation- cause that was already done many years ago. I’m talking about allowing Him to guide you in every area of life.

Family, we know that giving God a yes and allowing Him to direct your next moves is the best decision we can ever make.

I’m on a faith journey and ask for your continued prayers. I am standing on Jeremiah 29:11 and Jeremiah 33:3.

Sis spent over five decades singing and helping to spread the gospel through song. As a member of The Glorifying Vines Sisters, Sis sang lead on “Call on God,” “How Long,” and “Getting Ready to Go.” She performed and recorded “A Thousand Tongues,” as a duet with her son, Amp.
