Memories of Her
By Gwendolyn Gay
While gazing through a window a few stones throw away,
Thoughts of you, how often, while traveling a road now paved.
That even others before me praised bear witness to the same,
She, who transcended like a giant, still echoes beyond the grave.
As the calendar year pays homage to this, the first day,
To my grandma Lillie Parker Gay, 127 years old today.
I remember your spirit, your words, your smile,
Though many years have now passed,
and you have been gone for a while.
Yet it seems to me like it was only yesterday.
Of the many words l remember to this day
“A liar won’t tarry in his eyesight,” you would say,
And I remember how you noticed by your bedside, I knelt to pray.
And now that I am old, and my hair is colored gray,
I can still remember when you took your final breath that day.
“I’m leaving with my husband,”
It was life’s final quest.
Submissive and quieted spirit, qualities you possessed.
Off with him to take your rest.
Yet every now and again your presence seems near,
It’s just like you grandma, you are always here.

Elder Gwendolyn J. Gay is the daughter of the late Lucille Gay Blow and the granddaughter of the late “Ma” Lillie Parker Gay and “Pa Bob” Robert Gay.
